Volvo Gemini AI: Another Step in the Car Industry’s AI Buzz Cycle

Volvo Gemini AI

Volvo Gemini AI is coming — and it’s a good example of how “AI” has become the new must-have feature

At Google I/O 2025, Volvo showed off Google’s Gemini AI running in its EX90 electric SUV. It can navigate by voice, send and translate messages, and answer “how do I…” questions about the car — all without touching the screen.

It’s a nice upgrade. But it also shows how “AI” has become the go-to label for anything that’s a little smarter than before. Car companies, like tech companies, are racing to say they have AI, whether it’s truly groundbreaking or not.

What Volvo is actually doing

Volvo is the first automaker confirmed to integrate Volvo Gemini AI into production cars. Later this year, models with Google built-in will get it via a software update, replacing the old Google Assistant.

In practice, this means a more conversational voice system. You can say things in plain language instead of memorizing commands, and it’ll handle navigation, infotainment, and basic queries more naturally.

Why it’s useful but not revolutionary

It’s better than the clunky voice controls cars have had for years. The fact that it’s built into the dashboard and connected to the car’s systems makes it more seamless than using your phone.

But it’s still a voice assistant. It won’t drive the car. It’s not rethinking transportation. It’s making certain tasks easier — which is good, but not the leap forward that “AI in your car” might sound like in a headline.

The bigger pattern

Volvo isn’t alone here. Across the industry, AI is the headline feature, whether it’s in infotainment, driver assistance, or predictive maintenance. Sometimes it’s transformative. Sometimes, it’s just a better interface with a new label.

Volvo Gemini AI falls somewhere in between: a meaningful quality-of-life improvement, wrapped in the buzzword of the moment.

Bottom line

If you own a compatible Volvo, Gemini AI will make your in-car interactions smoother and more natural.

That’s worth something. But it’s also a reminder that “AI” in 2025 often means evolution, not revolution — and Volvo’s latest update is exactly that.
